Queens Park warning for greyhounds

Hi, im new here but i adopted my greyhound Mac at the end of December there.  I just want to warn anyone who walks their greyhounds in Queens Park.  My dog got attacked by a smallish to medium sized terrier/cross terrier with a dark grey curlyish coat in January this year and again on Sunday by the same dog except this time i got bitten quite badly on my arm as well trying to protect my dog.  The owner said his dog was attacked previously by two greyhounds but he seems to think it is now perfectly acceptable to let his dog attack as it pleases… his dog runs free and is unmuzzled.  When i asked him for his details, all i got was abuse.  When i showed him what his dog did to arm his response was that i shouldn’t have put my arm down.  This man looks to be in his late thirties and should know better but is completely irresponsible, uncaring and selfish.  My dog has lots of bites, some worse than others but he is okay.  As for the psychological damage, well time will tell.  He’s been terrified of other dogs since the first attack and had made good progress and now all that work is undone.  I dont want anyone else to have to go through what we have.

How awful and inexcusable to allow it to happen twice! Have you reported the incident/s to the dog warden?

I hope you can work with Mac and help him regain his confidence around other dogs and I hope yours hasn’t been too badly knocked either.

Oh no. That is awful. I hope you and Mac are ok and not too shaken by it. There are so many irresponsible dog owners out there. Meg has been gone for a couple of times when we have been out and, like you, me or Ian have ended up being the ones to pull the dog off of her. These people shouldn’t be allowed dogs.

Thank you for the warning. Please, please report this to the police. Any dog which is offlead and unmuzzled and attacks is a danger, regardless of size.
Hope you and mac recover from this shocking attack.

Thanks for all your comments.  I have reported it to the police and im waiting to hear from someone in the council so that the dog wardens are aware of it.  One lesson learned for me, always to carry my mobile phone!  Luckily in the days since its happened, we’ve met a few greyhounds out and about and Mac is definitely more confident with them.  I’ve realised since the last attack that i’ve got to sort of tough with him and tell him not to be silly when he’s scared walking past other dogs even though im dying to cuddle him and tell him its alright.  Fortunately he’s still happy to on walks smile

it makes me so angry to hear about these people - especially having had bad experiences in the past with uncontrollable dogs being off the leads. hope mac’s okay and glad he’s still happy to be out and about x

Sorry to hear about poor Mac.  Glad to hear he’s still happy when out walking.  It is just so angering that some people have no respect for other dogs or their owners.  You are quite right to report them.

Hi
I’m new here to.
We adopted Skip about 9 weeks ago and he had been doing fantastic until a fortnight ago in queens park when the same dog you are describing attacked him.  The dog was about 30 meters away from us and came tearing towards skip who was muzzled and on the lead, so completely defenceless.  I was not quick enough to protect him (which I feel awful about) and he got a very deep bite to his shoulder.  The owner gave us exactly the same explanation – his dog was attacked by 2 greys…..
Skip is on the mend now but it really set him back for a couple of weeks, he’s had 4 trips to the vet because of it!
Can you please give me the details of the local police station and the dog warden that you reported it to so that I can report this attack also.
I really hope you and Mac are both ok, I was so upset to read your post and learn that this was not a one off incident

That is so horrible. I don’t see why it is so difficult to muzzle a dog if it is agreesive. It saves you getting sued and your dog getting put down. Luckily Meg hasn’t never been attached that badly. My sister’s old dog was attached by a bull terrier cross and was hurt so badly her lung was pierced. These people should be locked up. I hope Mac and Skip are both doing better.

Hi greysrgreat,  I’m really sorry to hear that Skip has been hurt too.  I reported it to Craigie Street Police Station and the case has been passed onto two police who work the Queens Park area.  I dont have their names though im afraid.  The date i reported it was the 21st of April if that helps.  As for the council, they were useless and said it was up to the police when they phoned me back.
Dont feel bad about not being able to protect Skip, the attacks happen so quickly its impossible to get away or do much.  Four trips to the vet must be costly for you, Mac has had two visits and i’ve spent about £150.  It’ll end up costing a lot more if it gets to the point i need to get a behaviourist for Mac to try to boost his confidence as he really is a mess just now around other dogs apart from Greys.
I dont understand this dogs owner as he’s not protecting his own dog by allowing to attack this way.
I’ll never walk Mac in that park again, i just dont feel its safe and its not fair to him.  Because it happened to me twice, i knew it must surely have happened to others although im really sorry to hear it.  Good luck with the police and it would be great if you could let me know how you get on.
