Hi,
As you say there is no quick fix to this problem I know this because having had Sammy for almost two years we still have issues with other dogs even when in the car. Although I must say nothing near as bad as at the start.
When I started going to the GAL walks I kept a comfortable distance away from the other dogs and just walked about so as Sammy could see what was going on.Still do this but we are gradually getting closer to them.
It has taken a while to get to this stage.but he is worth the effort, he is a brilliant dog.

            Elinor.

Thanks for the encouragement. When is the next walk and where please?

7th of February, Strathclyde Park at the Bothwellhaugh car park at eleven o’clock.
Usually all the walks at Strathclyde Park are held on the first Sunday of every month.
Hope to see you there,I find them enjoyable.

This post also relates to the caeser Milan one and I have been well aware that there is huge controversy over his methods but I have got to say that one of his methods works brilliantly with my non-greyhound Bailey whos behaviour I have mentioned in previous posts.

I find if he sees a dog straight on or if I was to try to talk to someone with a dog he howls like mad and the longer you ignore it the worse he gets.

What works for him is to walk next to the dog and after about ten minutes I have absolutely no problems and they walk quite happily next to each other.
My friend now also lets her dog off the lead around him when he has cooled off which is making such a difference as it is usually when dogs are off the lead he is at his worst. He now completely ignores her even when she runs right past him.

Obviously it depends on the level of the “maddies” but once again walking him for a good while before introducing other dogs tends to lower the level of these and allows them to be more managable when starting off.

The walks are a brilliant idea Joyce and everyone at GAL will give you so much help and Elinor has done a brilliant job with Sammy I think it will give you more confidence for the future.

On the lead issue I have my non-greys on extendable leads but I def wouldn’t recommend them for greyhounds especially with some of the girls with such fine necks. All the greys I have walked over the past few years through GAL were happy enough just to get out on leads but it was nice to have garden to let them run in and everyone seems really positive about the dog enclosures at some of the parks.

hi jinty im eleanor and i have a greyhound called travis and 2 lurchers jet and milo. Ive had the 2 older ones for 7 years now and could never imagine life without them, but milo has a problem with fear aggression which i used to find mortifying when i took him for a walk, people used to pull their dogs away from him understandably but my heart broke because those people always said terrible things which would get me angry as they didnt know him.I started putting a muzzle on him on walks and although he didnt like it he got used to it.The people who gave him a wide berth started to talk to me and milo soon became a well liked dog. People are afraid of muzzles when they see a dog with one on especially a greyhound but most dont understand that a lot of the time these dogs have been through bad times and find it hard to trust. I would say put a muzzle on your dog they dont mind it at all and it gives you piece of mind when you take him out it will also let people know that you know hes a bit grumpy but at the same time you r making sure he is safe and so are their dogs. Milo was attacked by an akita and it has changed his personality but i wouldnt part with him for anything hes my boy.persevere it does get better good luck.                milo jet and travis mum
