Hi Amanda

I had labradors for many years but after they were gone I gradually became more and more aware of the rotten deal that many greyhounds get and decided that I would like to have a couple.

3rd December 2009 I got Petra from GAL and 16 February Shadow (Lurcher) arrived from GAL so in the space of 2 months I went from none to 2. I really have to watch myself because I fall for every second one I meet and could end up with a houseful!!!

I was brought up with whippets and greys always around and had my first whippet.. Noot.. When I was 22.. 1980. He went everywhere with me and even to Germany and did the whole quarantine of 6 months on our return.. he went suddenly missing a few months after he got out and after many people stopped me in the street asking to buy him or meet their bitch.. strange eh.. he was 12 and I thought I’d have a broken heart forever.. Bess arrived from a rescue down south when a friend took her in and then her marriage broke up.. She also travelled to Germany and only did a month of quarantine when the Pets Passports came into being..She was with us for eight glorious years and passed away around the age of 12/13..

It took a few years to be able to take anothere grey and then along came Eugene.. (Genegene..)Who was here for 20 great months before he left so suddenly over the bridge a few months ago..

I’m sitting here bawling my eyes out for all my beautiful pointys that I’ve loved and lost.. and for all that you lovely GAL people have loved and lost..

I looked in earlier and had to go for a wee cry when I read about Ziggy and Byron

I’ve no idea what it is about these beautiful greys that bring out such emotion in us.. I’m so glad that it does though and canot wait to have another elegant pointy in my life again.

Eric was passing the Edinburgh Cat & Dog Home when on business in Aug 1998 and popped in (as you do as we wanted a doggie pal for Lassie) - said there was a dog we should look at.  That weekend we went back, the dog he saw was not suitable and we were offered a greyhound. “Honey” as we named her came home with us on that day.  We had her for 6 years, her guesstimate age when we got her was 6. A very short time after Honey left us, we went back to E C & D Home and got “Izzy” (as we named her, Grey/Alsatian cross ).  Age unknown , about 5 we think.  Sadly, we only had her for about 16-18 mths when she was diagnosed with cancer. That was in Aug 2005, in Oct 2005 we got Penny (racing name Penny Leigh) who will be 10 on April Fool’s day. Now we have Lana , grey number 4 !  grin

We got Meg about 2 and a half years ago from our neighbour. She was his dad’s and he was dying. She was adopted and raced again which broke our hearts. She came with her issues - separation anxiety and fear aggression of dogs and people - which is so hard to believe now seeing how laid back she is. She has been our one and only hound, although we have now fostered about 14 greyhounds and one lurcher who have all but one left us for pastures new after Benson won our hearts last December. Once you go greyhound you never go back!

I lived with a whippet for about 4 years when I was in school which got me into sighthounds.  Only got Coal last Nov. (who was suppose to be our first foster dog) and now have Arnie, our offical first foster! smile

I had my cat Toots, hence the name, for nearly 17 years and when she passed knew I could never have another cat - she was a nutter, attacked visitors frightened dogs etc etc, but my baby - and since I was in a position to get a dogwalker and knew about the plight of greyhounds started looking into it when I knew she was on her way out.
Toots died the summer of 2006 and despite me telling my family not to let me get another pet for three months to give myself time to try life without the tie of an animal I knew within days I could not stand coming home to an empty house.
Mason arrived a month later, he had been rehomed already but bounced after getting out his house and into a neighbours where he killed their cats.
It was ironic he replaced my Toots but she was such a psycho I alway felt she would have approved.
He was an incredible first dog, a real gentleman, handsome and sweet to every other dog he met big or tiny and a people person. The vet nurses dubbed him the ‘George Clooney of the dog world’ and he was.
He was the reason I moved back to the west, to get a house with a garden for him, and sadly passed away a month before we moved over.
In his honour I became more involved with GAL and continue to do so in his memory.
He gave me such great memories and the confidence to take on Byron with all his nuttiness and now Donnie, as well as old Nell, who lived with him briefly before he left us.

We were never allowed pets growing up so reckon I am making up for it now.  Got my first cat, Sadie, in 2003.  After I moved out of the family home decided she needed a pal, so got Pepper in May 2004.  And at that point I convinced my dad a wee animal for him would be nice so he took Peppers litter mate, Missy.

After a few years of working and living locally, I had a car, decided it would be nice to have a dog.  I moved house first (previously living in a flat) and Brook the lurcher arrived from GAl in July 2006.  She is an absolutely fabulous first dog and thanks to Dave for matching her with me and also to the couple who brought her out (can’t remember their names).  She loves people and always well behaved she is now 10!!

My dad moved to the USA and I got Missy Feb 2008.  So with 3 cats and a dog I figured that I wanted more experience of dogs so decided to foster.

I have had the pleasure of helping out Gene (Eugene) - also in tears when I head he had gone.  Then there was Charlie and then Benji.  Took a break and currently have Lewis, who I would love to keep but finances dictate otherwise.  Lewis will be going to his new fabulous home at the end of March.  His new owners have met him a few times and we have been to their house too.  Oh did I mention, he will be living with Charlie.  I couldn’t have asked for a better place for Lewis.
