I know, not a nice topic but just looking for anyone who may have experience of this.

A couple of weeks ago Brook seemed to have lost control and ‘dribbled’ a couple of times.  Urine sample to vet showed some bacteria but the vet also advised high protein in the urine.

Anti-biotics finished, she got 7 day course then 10 day course, and bacteria cleared up but still high protein.

Now, reading on the internet - which I probably shouldn’t do - this seems to indicate some kind of problem with the kidney.  I have to go back on Friday with another sample (10 days after I stopped the anti-biotics) but just wondered if anyone had anything similar to reassure me?

Brook is 10, eating well, drinking normally and still running around like she is 2 sometimes.  So everything else seems fine.  Any advice appreciated.

Hi,

My grey girl Kayri was on Incurin for urinary incontinence from when she about 8yrs until she died (unrelated) at nearly 11 yrs old. When she first became incontinent the vet gave her a course of antibiotics as there was some protein in her urine. They never worked but the incurin did. We were required to provide a urine sample on a regular basis cos she was on a repeat prescription for her incurin. ALL her urine samples showed higher than usual levels of protein and the vet and I just accepted this “normal” for her. I’m sure if she had had any severe kidney problems she would have deteriorated in quite a short time.

Good Luck.

Carole, my Nellie developed incontinence issues latterly and was on Urilin. Every time they tested her urine they said her protein was high but it was never conclusive enough to suggest a serious problem.
It may just be an age thing and if the Urilin or other medication works I would not stress too much about the protein levels.
Don’t look on the internet, it will make you crazy! If you are worried there is a blood test they can do to check kidney functions but I would try and chill about it.

Thanks for the advice, I should have said that Brook has not been incontinent since the treatment of anti-biotics, so I am assuming the bacteria caused that.

Will try not to worry, but given her age its hard not to.

Thanks

Well it seems Brook’s protein/creatnine ratio is high, so blood tests on Tuesday.  As I cancelled her insurance last year (due to financial reasons) I’m just taking it one thing at a time and trying to juggle things to make sure I can get any medication/tretment she may need!

Wish us well for good results from bloods!

Wishing Brook all the best with her blood results next week.  Must be so worrying for you. I noticed in your original post that you said she seemed to be quite well in herself so maybe whatever is causing the raised protein etc levels won’t affect her too much.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you & Brook next week.

Best Wishes

Just to let you know Brook got the all clear from her blood tests.  This means that she is fit and healthy, will be around for another few years!

Thanks again for all the advice.
