well, poor mia has an abscess..and it popped some point today :(

she was a bit sleepy yesterday but we’d been for a run around on saturday night and she always gets really tired for a few days after a big run. she had the runs a bit this morning and hadn’t been her usual self…i just got home from work at 1030, and i didn’t get my usual welcome!

so, after chatting with allan he thought she might have been a bit down because of her jippy tummy, so i took her through to the kitchen and she was just so, so tired, and not even interested in a treat!

we went back through to the living room and at this point, from a different angle, allan noticed a mark on her shoulder. closer inspection, it was a gaping hole about an inch wide… quite a clean cut?, and there was just a tiny bit of blood on her bed. i called the vet and was recommended to clean it, and bring her in first thing for antibiotics (as she is still alert and had eaten dinner, just woozy more than anything else, and didn’t seem in too much pain).

so, mummy is not in the best of books with mia after getting the gunk from the wound! (allan got to do the head stroking) but she seems a bit more comfortable and i think i cleaned it quite well… she is a poor wee soul though and hopefully the antibiotics will help, although i’ve not to feed her before the morning vet trip just in case they need to do anything major.

she’s now chilled out in the corner and i’m keeping a close eye on her. surgery opens at 830 so i’ll take her down for 8am to make sure she’s seen first.

has anyone had experience of this before? the vet sounded quite calm about it, like it wasn’t too much to worry about, but you know what google can do to you!

will keep you posted as to how we get on in morning x

Aww poor Mia. She will be milking this for all it’s worth! My old dog, Bonnie, had an abscess in her mouth. I don’t remember too much about it, although I think it happened through something silly like eating something with an edge so i think it can happen quite easily. Keep us updated.

I had a cat with an abscess on her leg - she got a pucture wound from something (was an indoor/outdoor cat so could be anything) so the visible wound was quite small but the injury further from the body surface couldn’t heal and it abscessed.  Basically, they need to drain the abscess, clean it out and stitch it up.  As long as the incison was kept clean there’s usually no problem.
I’ve also had a mouth abscess and that was completely terrible and painful!  lol
Best of luck!

Mia was a big brave girl and didn’t even yelp smile

two antibiotic jags, and she’s to go back tomorrow for stitches, but otherwise fine. they think she’s just maybe banged her shoulder on something (we’ve got a coffee and tv table about her ‘getting up’ height, so those are prime suspects) and it’s formed an abscess which has burst.

Champ was delighted to see her back home - he was waiting at the window for her a good hour later! He then followed her all around the garden to make sure she was ok. it’s lovely, probably the first time we’ve seen a caring bond between the two of them properly, i think illness maybe does bring it out.

fingers crossed she’s still doing well later, i’ve left her in champ’s capable hands while i’ve come to work. will keep you posted.x

hi all,it’s been a hectic few days! as well as mias abscess,we’ve had decorators in so the house is in a state. luckily the hounds are coping well with the disruption, including mia,who has been a wee trouper.

the stitching up went well, and we think it was caused by her running into something as there is some bruising around the area.her scar is quite long but it will heal well.thankfully the position of it means a cone is out of the question.. but Mia has been donning one of my tshirts since she got home as an alternative!!

all well, apart from the initial scare, and the vet bill..just glad she’s ok tho smile
