Lulu has become incontinent and is wetting in her sleep.  It seems that this is common in bitches who have been spayed.  The Vet has prescribed Incurin tablets.

Has anyone else had this problem with their dog and if so did they respond to Incurin?

I hope this is successful and that there is nothing more sinister going on.

Hi Alan
Incontinence is something that spayed bitches can be prone too although I’ve found it tends to occur more as they get older.

My old lurcher Mouse was on Incurin for accidents which started to happen in her sleep, it worked brilliantly for her and the accidents stopped immediately. It is a hormone based medication and the only side effect we experienced were some male dogs (always labs) tended to be a little more interested in her. I believe the amount prescribed can be reduced once you find the correct dosage.

My old greyhound girl Jenna was prescribed Propalin syrup for her incontinence and again it worked very well with no obvious side effects.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dee for the reassurance.  grin

I hope it works for Lulu.

She has been on Incurin for a week and I’ve to carry on giving her the tablets for another week and then let the Vet know how she is doing.

I’m not sure how quickly the Incurin starts to work, but if anything I’d say she has gotten worse in the last couple of days.

Perhaps it’ll take a couple of weeks to get her oestrogen level back up.

I’ll keep the post going either way.

If Incurin does not work ask about Urilin, it worked with Nell, who also started leaking in her sleep. Be aware the dose recommended may be far too high.
Nell was supposed to start on 35 drops a day but became agitated. For many months she needed only 5 drops a day which was increased gradually as her condition required it.

Mouse was on one tablet morning and night, can’t remember what mg the tablets were but she was a small girl only 18kg in weight. Perhaps Lulu’s dose needs adjusted.

Sadly both Jenna and Mouse are no longer with me but if there is anyone out there who has a bitch taking Propalin syrup I have nearly a full bottle which you are welcome to, just PM me.

Hope Lulu’s incontinence is soon resolved and it really isn’t anything to worry about.  Not sure how old Lulu is but she always looks fantastic at the walks and in very rude health. grin

Thanks Dee and Marie for your advice.

Lulu weighs 27kg and is now 8 years old, it’s hard to believe that I’ve had her and Douglas for five and a half years.

She is really fit and still regularly tears around my garden at full speed, easily leving her son Douglas in her wake.

The Vet recommended the 1mg dose once a day for 2 weeks and if it works OK.  He said that the dose can be reduced gradually to find the minimum effective dose.  He said in some cases 1 tablet per week can be enough.

Here’s hoping it works for her.

I’ve missed the lase couple of walks due to extensive gardening duties, but hope to come along to the July walk.

Kind Regards,

Hello Alan

Lana was incontinent when we got her and you may have read several posts that I put on re her medication and it’s effectiveness.

The dosages at the moment are 1 incurin tablet per day and 05.ml x 3 per day of propalin. For a while it worked then symptoms got worse.  Around this time Lana had her cat chasing incident and part of the treatment for injuries was metacalm once a day for two weeks and that has now been reduced by half.  Amazingly she was bone dry on the two weeks. On half measures there has only been one slight accident. Vet was very surprised as this shouldn’t have happened!

It may be that Lulu has a slight bladder inflamation that metacalm could treat?  Has a urine sample been taken just incase she has a slight infection - appreciate that if there is an infection she would be weeing more during the day too.

Hope things settle down soon.

Thanks for the info.  Sorry for the delay in replying, but my Grandson grin was born on the 15th and it’s been a bit topsy turvey since then.

I had taken a sample to the Vet, but it was normal.  The Incurin didn’t work so the Vet prescribed Urilin, 10 drops 3 times a day, and this has woeked a treat.  Lulu has been fine since the first day on this new regime.

I think she will be OK now.

Thanks to all for your support and advice.

See you at Strathclyde Park on 4th July.

Kind Regards,
