Had a great time at the Summer Fayre yesterday and as the weather was really good took Mojo and Nuala for a walk around Strathclyde Park.
On our way around passed a couple with a Staffordshire Bull Terrier on an extendable lead but as Mojo, Nuala, my daughter and I were on the grass verge didn’t think anything of it. However we met the couple and the dog again at the other side of the park in the wooded area - pathways are quite narrow at this point so as usual I pulled Mojo up next to me with a very short lead. Low and behold the young lad that had a hold of the staffie loosened the lead and the dog got hold of Mojo’s leg!!!! Mojo let out an almighty scream. The woman asked me if her dog had hurt my dog. I said of course but she just walked off. After examining Mojo it didn’t look as bad as I thought as it looked as if the dog has just got hold of Mojo’s fur. So went on our way. By the time I got back to my car it was bleeding and examining it closer that was a deep cut it Mojo’s leg so phoned the Emergency Vets in Stirling. Told to take him in straight there. Mojo now has 5 staples in his wound and with a vet’s bill of £250. Thank goodness for pet insurance!!!! Off to my own vet’s tomorrow to make sure everything looks fine.
I have no problem with Staffordshire Bull Terriers but will certainly be a lot more wary the next time I’m in Strathclyde Park and staffie are about.
That’s awful. I hate bad dog owners. This happens far too much these days. I don’t have a problem with aggressive dogs, because they are usually fine with their own families but they should always be muzzled outside. I don’t know why anyone would risk other people’s dogs and their own being destroyed if it attacks. I hope Mojo is ok.
Tilly was attacked by a neighbour’s dog in her foster home.
Poor Snoopy was attacked by 2 off lead collies, which has left him very nervous. As if he hadn’t been through enough recently!
Now Mojo with a responsible owner and on a short lead is attacked by a very powerful breed of dog on an extendable lead under the control of a young boy.
It makes my blood boil!!
I hope that Mojo is going to be ok and that the staffie owners consign the extendable lead to the bin, and get their dog under proper control.
Makes me so angry to hear about this. There are so many people with attitudes of"oh my dog is okay he/she wouldn’t attack another dog” Then let them run off lead or use extending leads and this is what happens.
Hope Mojo and yourselves are not too upset by what has happened.
Elinor.
poor mojo, shame they dont have cctv in strathclyde park or you could have traced the owner of the staffie and asked them to stump up even the excess for your insurance….i come across this a lot in the park where the owners dont have their dog on lead and always say “oh my dog is okay” but then i get extremely annoyed when there dog follows me and angel gets more hyper by the minute.. the owners usually look at me as if angel is the untrained dog because she gets excited but shed be fine if they kept their dogs away…
angel and rosie wish mojo a speedy recovery and shame you had a disastrous end to what was a lovely day
Healing wishes for Mojo i see RED at these so called irresponsible dog owners, seems theres NO escaping them, theyre everywere, just hope Mojo doesnt suffer any set bks with this xxxxxxxx
Poor Mojo, hope he recovers from his ordeal ok. Clyde is always muzzled when I walk him where there will be other dogs because he can be a wee bit unpredictable. What I cannot stand is owners who think because Clyde is muzzled there is no risk to their dog so they allow them to come up behind Clyde for a sniff!! Thankfully neither of mine have been attacked but I am always wary passing staffies in particular because of their strong jaws!! Lauren was bitten by an offlead jack russell a couple of months ago though, the owner knew she’d been bitten but carried on his way saying ‘he’s just a bit excitable’. I’m hoping that since the police chapped his door he’ll have his dogs under better control!! Lauren had to go on her holidays with a bruise and teeth marks on the back of her thigh!!
Any owner who walks away when their dog has attacked is not fit to have a dog, in my opinion.
Donnie nipped the ear of a spaniel who lives quite near me once, completely out of character for him, and all the dogs were on the lead at the time.
I was mortified, stayed to make sure she was okay and went round the next day to double check, accidents can happen but the attitude of some owners is truly appalling.
Hope Mojo recovers and doesn’t have any lasting issues.
Marie
Jeez oh!! I’m so sorry to hear what happened to sweet Mojo. Hope you all recover quickly from your very scary ordeal.
I have to say that I totally agree with the rest of the folks who have replied, it drives me nuts when folk walk their dogs off lead in public places. In my opinion, it should be against the law, especially as there are so many irresponsible owners out there.
Pepper is always muzzled when we go out for walks & I’m on the prowl for a suitable muzzle for Meikka, but you’re right folk let their dogs get too close for comfort. And yes, it’s us that move out their roads and put our dogs on short leads in order to extend the space between them….....then the dog is allowed to follow you as the owner continues to walk on!!!! Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh!!!
I lost the rag with a teenage boy the other day. We had both dogs a walk down the Clyde valley, as usual Pepper was muzzled and both pups were on short lead. This 1st class Plonker was walking the opposite way with a massive German Shepard off lead, this dog made a b-line for Pepper who was frantically jumping about, I managed to get between them which settled Pepper down slightly. Numbnuts continued to walk by wearing his earphones calling on the dog. I’m afraid he got the sharp end of my tongue, along the lines of the dog to be tethered. I was undoubtedly ignored but I thought I would land myself in bother to go after him as I think I would’ve slapped him at the back of the head. It’s was more important to settle the dogs than deal with imbeciles like him. Unfortunately, the world is full of them!!
Pepper & Meikka send their love xx
Took Mojo to our own vet tonight and the wound is healing fine. Mojo is the most laid back dog I have ever met and the incident doesn’t seem to have bothered him. Am now very wary of staffies. Out with both dogs on Monday night and crossed the road as there was a young girl with a staffie who was being very excitable after passing a lady with a border collie needless to say the young girl was having trouble controlling the dog but fortunately it was on a very strong lead. As I have said before I have nothing against the breed but only in the right hands of a responsible owner.
