Summer Gala 2010 - What a day!
25 August 2010
What an absolutely amazing day the GAL Summer GALa and Fun Dog Show 2010 was!!
The event was extremely well attended and the GAL committee and volunteers worked tirelessly to make sure that everyone had a brilliant day out.
The amount of dogs in the hall was just staggering and each and every one of them made their owners proud, whether they won a prize or not. All of GAL’s homeless hounds were were behaved and had a lot of the folk in the hall reaching for the hankies. Let’s hope it isn’t long until GAL finds them homes to call their own.
The photos from the day can be found by clicking on the link below. Many thanks to Richard for taking on this task.

The GAL cafe raised nearly £500! Many thanks to all involved keeping everyone fed, whether you baked, filled rolls, made tablet and marmalade or poured tea and coffee on the day. A special thanks to Fabrice for his wonderful French patisserie. Fabrice, the Christmas Fayre is on 28th November!! Just in case you’re free!
The book stall took in £77! Thanks to Violet for all her hard work collecting the books. We hope to see you again in November.
Thanks to Lucy and Tracy who brought along their hand crafted jewellery and cards.
Thanks to everyone who brought along a homeless hound and for looking after them so well. They all did you proud!
It was good to see so many “old” friends, Lorne came all the way from Aberdeen with little Amber. Eric and Fiona came from Montrose with their two lovely girls, Penny and Lana.
The star attraction of the event had to be The Robroyston Runaway aka Lucy. There was not a dry eye in the house when she made an appearance as guest of honour in the Homeless Hound parade, but her mum Claire was very firmly holding on to her lead in case someone thought Lucy was available. This lucky girl has well and truly landed on her four paws in a caring home. When Lucy won Best In Show in the Greyhounds and Lurchers ring it was the icing on the cake!
Thanks to GAL Lucy is no longer scavenging for food and in danger of dying from hypothermia! She is safe and well and being treated like royalty, just as all greyhounds and lurchers should be!
The face painting proved very popular, with thanks to Laura for her artistic creativity, as did hook-a-duck, and the tombola. Thanks to the Fleming family for organising these attractions. The raffle took in nearly £300! Thanks to Elinor and Joan for harassing folk! Joe and Liz once again “manned” the door, ably assisted by the lovely Maddie.
The shop was run with efficiency by Elaine and Lita and took in a very respectable amount. Remember that you can always email Elaine if you require a particular coat for your dog and she will bring it to the next GAL walk.
The judges had the most difficult of tasks on the day as they had to decide which dogs meritted rosettes, but as always Paul and Morag carried out their duties smoothly and enjoyed seeing so many gorgeous four legged friends. The Best in Show in Ring 1 was Lucy with her mum Claire with Reserve going to Mika whose dad had allowed his mum Joan to have a shot of his boy!, The Flanigan family were celebrating again when young Jake got Best Young Dog, with the gorgeous brindle boy Rocket taking Reserve Best Young Dog. His mum Flora was bursting with pride at his achievement.
The Best in Show in Ring 2 was little Alfie with his owner Kennedy, with Reserve going to an event regular Jack with his owner Kimberley. Congratulations to the winners in all the categories. All the rescue dogs in the hall are of course winners in their own right as they have all been given a second chance!
Thank you once again to South Lanarkshire’s Provost Mr Russell Clearie, who just doesn’t come along, but participates fully. He loves to assist Morag judge the dog show and enjoys the home baking. This time he even got his face painted. No standing on ceremony for Russell!
Huge thanks to the GAL committee for their dedication in helping make the day a success, and of course to their families and friends for supporting them.
The total amount raised on the day is a staggering £3447.21 and will ensure that GAL can continue to save as many dogs as it possibly can.
Finally thank you to Arden Grange for donating the prizes given out at the event. Arden Grange is a complete dry kibble which is suited to retired greyhounds and lurchers. http://www.ardengrange.com/
