September Can Collection
GAL would like to thank all of the hounds and volunteers who helped to raise a fantastic £777 on Buchanan Street at the weekend.
We were lucky with the weather and met lots of lovely supporters from around the world. Every penny raised goes towards the care of our homeless hounds.
Lotus (above) and Beauty (right) have joined GAL from the Macau Canidrome, which was closed last year. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped them along the way, and they are now beginning to adapt to life in the West of Scotland!
As with all GAL hounds, we are taking special care to gently introduce them to the sights and sounds of everyday life, and 10 year-old Beauty has already found the couch in her foster home.

Foster home found!!
Forever Foster Home Needed
One of GAL's forever foster dogs, Brandy, is in need of a new forever foster home.
Unfortunately, Brandy's current forever fosterer is having on-going health issues and he is no longer able to care for Brandy.
Brandy is 13 years old and a bit unsteady on his legs but still gets excited about going for walks. He'll need access to a garden and no stairs.
If you could possibly offer this wonderful old lad a place to spend his remaining days, please get in touch with GAL by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Update on Jeanie
You may remember a post we made a few months ago about our Jeanie –a 2.5 year old greyhound girl who was diagnosed with a severe heart condition after she arrived at GAL and was given weeks to live at most. Jeanie was moved to a foster home with GAL Vice-Convenor Laura Dixon to enjoy the comforts of home life before she died.
We are happy to report that Jeanie is still with us and doing better than expected. She has been described as ‘defying the odds’ by her vets and with the help of medication is enjoying a comfortable life. She has managed to put on some weight, love her meals and snacks, goes for short walks in the countryside with her foster brother Coal and sleeps on beds and sofas. Her current favourite activity is sunbathing in the garden. She could still die at any time but she has been able to enjoy a prolonged lifespan thanks to GAL and our supporters. We hope Jeanie still has a while left to enjoy life and are happy that she has gotten to experience being a beloved pet for as long as she has.
Jeanie is a 2 year old girl who recently finished racing and was given to GAL for re-homing. As with all GAL dogs, Jeanie was booked into be spayed shortly after she arrived in our care. However, when she was given pre-anaesthetic before the surgery, she had a very bad reaction and the vet immediately decided to forego spaying until we knew why she had reacted so badly. It could have been a bad reaction to the drug used or there could be an underlying condition with her heart. So Jeanie had blood tests, an ultrasound and EGC recordings with a vet cardiologist to try and figure out the problem. The news wasn’t good – there was something wrong with Jeanie’s heart and her life expectancy could be measured in weeks at the most.
Ex-GAL committee member and super-volunteer Marina couldn’t bear that Jeanie die as a ‘homeless hound’, so Marina adopted Jeanie. Unfortunately Marina’s home wasn’t suitable for a dog with a heart condition – there were too many stairs to get into the flat which would put too much strain on Jeanie’s heart. GAL wanted Jeanie to experience life as a pet in a home before she died, so GAL Vice-Convenor Laura offered Jeanie a place on her sofa for the rest of her days. Laura has senior dogs and lives in a quiet area which was thought to be suitable for Jeanie’s needs.
Jeanie is now enjoying the comforts of a home. The vet has warned that she could die at any time but GAL is making sure that Jeanie will be happy for whatever time she has left.

Back to School - 6th June
GAL had a great afternoon out at Firpark Secondary School, where we talked to the young people about greyhounds and GAL and let them meet Kizzie, Col, Queenie and Dutch.
The class had been studying a poem about a greyhound named Michael and wanted to know more about the breed so we were happy to go along and answer their questions and the hounds (who were on their best behaviour) loved getting loads of cuddles from their new pals. In honour of the young people we met, we've decided that the next male dog we get in will be named Michael. The poem is below (Michael sounds like he's got the life every greyhound deserves, and it'll sound familiar to many greyhound owners too):
"Michael" by James Copeland
It's the best steak mince for Michael
Aye, it's only the best for Mick,
Ma daddy near faints when he sneezes,
An' goes aff his heid when he's sick.
Ah'm fed up wi' jaikets an' troosers
Cut doon frae ma daddy's aul' suits,
But Mick got a coat for his Christmas,
Forbye he got two perra boots.
Yon night ah wiz shiverin' an' sweatin'
It wiz through gettin' soaked ah suppose,
Ma Mammy said, "He's got a temperature"
An' ma daddy felt Michael's nose.
"Git back frae the fire!" says ma daddy,
"Le' Michael streitch oot oan the rug!"
Aye, Michael's a durty big greyhound,
An' ah get the life o' a dug.
Did you know Pets at Home are offering a VIP Card which allows customers to collect Lifelines for their chosen charity every time they shop in store or on-line? At the end of each quarter these Lifelines are given to the charities as credits to be spent in store. As well as helping your chosen rescue charity you’ll get exclusive discounts on a range of products and a 10% off voucher in your welcome pack.
We’re very grateful to the following stores for nominating GAL as their chosen charity: Ayr, Bishopbriggs, Irvine and the Isle of Man. This doesn’t mean only people who shop at these stores can help GAL - far from it!
When you sign up for a card, in-store or online, you’ll receive a welcome pack which asks you to register your card on-line. You’ll then be asked to select your home store. To help GAL just enter one of the four stores that have nominated us. You can then use your card at ANY store in the UK and help GAL collect Lifelines for our homeless hounds.

Turn your online shopping into cash for GAL
Do you shop online? Did you know that every time you buy something you could be raising money for GAL?
Over 2400 well known retailers including Amazon, M&S, Boden, Waitrose, House of Fraser, Vodafone, Virgin Atlantic and many more, will donate a percentage of what you spend to GAL! when you shop with them, via fundraising website easyfundraising.org.uk
How does it work?
It’s like nectar but instead of earning points, each purchase generates a donation. So instead of going directly to a retailer’s website, go to easyfundraising first and choose the retailer you want to shop with – then everything you spend with that retailer earns a free donation for GAL. It’s completely free to use and your shopping won’t cost you a penny more.
On average, each retailer will donate 5% of the cost of your shopping - and those donations soon mount up.
So whatever you need to buy, from your weekly grocery shop or fashion must-have, to your business travel, office supplies or mobile phone, buy it via easyfundraising and raise money for GAL at no extra cost to you!
